The Pope
It is tradition that the new Pope chooses for himself a new name. The first Pope to change its name of baptism was, in the 533, Pope Giovanni II who in truth called Mercury and thought therefore unsuitable that the bishop of Rome had the name of one pagana divinity. After he also others papi chose a new name, or because they had unpleasant names or because foreign. Nobody of name Peter wanted to then call Peter II like shape of respect for Saint Peter. To the end to change to the name divenne a rule that had however some exception. As an example Adrian Breakspear was Adrian IV, Marcello Cervini was Marcello II.
